Kenya: week 1

As usual, we are a little behind on the updates, but will do a quick catch-up now.  The last week has been pretty busy, as we are still getting settled into life here in Nairobi where we will be for the next month.

Highlights:

  • Having the flexibility to be bumped off the London-Nairobi flight, getting a day to chill in an airport hotel and catch up on sleep, and a nice chunk of cash in return! Thanks BA!
  • Arriving in Nairobi and linking up with the Children of Kibera Foundation (CoKF) annual student trip (nothing like honeymooning with a bunch of high school students :)  Its a great group, and has been fun to spend time with them. CoKF's blog is here.
  • Attending the CoKF music festival in Kibera about 12 hours after landing at the airport.
  • Spending two days at Lake Nakuru national park (see photos below)
  • Finding an apartment! (we have yet to move in, but should do so soon).
Lowlights
  • Both of us getting some kind of stomach bug within a week of arriving. doh. We are on the mend though ...

More details and stories to come.  We are working on putting together a two week college application prep workshop for the CoKF high school scholars who need to start applying to universities in Kenya and abroad this coming year.  Thinking about how long ago we took the SAT and filled out those applications is making us feel a little old!

Some photos from the Lake Nakuru trip - this kind of place gives me serious camera envy! It is a bird photographer's paradise, in addition to all the other game we saw (lions, rhinos, giraffes, etc). The full album can been see here.
